Questo è un vetro di sicurezza poiché, in caso di rottura, preserva l’incolumità fisica delle persone vicine rompendosi in numerosi piccoli frammenti ovali, dai bordi smussati e non taglienti, che molto difficilmente possono provocare delle ferite. Questa qualità è ottenuta sottoponendo il vetro normale ad un particolare trattamento termico che crea una forza di tensione all’interno del materiale e di compressione all’esterno. Sono proprio queste forze a causare la formazione istantanea di crepe in ogni direzione durante la rottura, che ne determinano lo sbriciolamento in innocui pezzi di ridotte dimensioni. This quality is obtained by subjecting the ordinary glass to a special heating treatment that creates tensile strength inside the material and compression outside it.
